How is Christ the Power of God?

Christ is God or more precisely the Second Person in God having the same infinite nature as God as He stated, "I am in the Father and the Father is in me." (Jn 14:10)

That the power of God was in him He revealed by healing the sick, calming the storm, casting out demons and raising the dead. The miracle lies in this, that He did this not by any medical means but purely by willing it to be done. In the case of healing, we may say Christ out of his infinite intelligence sent a stream of information causing the necessary energetic biological movements, the healing process, to take place. His healing will was also expressed through his human nature by words and actions. One day Christ was summoned to a house of an apparently dead girl. He took by the hand and told the child to rise. Her breath immediately returned and she arose. (Lk 8:54-55)

How is Christ the Wisdom of God?

God's wisdom is unlike human wisdom in three ways:

1. God's Wisdom is the mind of God from all eternity.
2. God's Wisdom is embodied in all creatures.
3. God's Wisdom is, in many ways, hidden from men it is internal to God and extends from the beginning of creation to its end.

St. Paul exults God's wisdom thus,

"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!

'For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?'
'Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?'

For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be glory forever. Amen." (Rm 11:33-36)

The Son of God is designated a "Word" or "Wisdom" of the Father because He is generated from all eternity by the Father from his infinite intelligence thus being the image of the Father by generation. The Son is God from God, thus God in nature. The designation Son establishes his relationship to the Father which we express in human terms because this is the personal way of expressing the reality. This relationship in God is primary and the foundation of all other human relationships.

In his Wisdom God created and is creating all things in, with and through his eternal Son. The cosmic canopy of stars, the countless generations of men and the angels are created for his Son because in becoming man he clothed himself with the visible universe so as to lead it into God's eternal glory. Christ is the mind of God thus revealing the mysteries of his kingdom. It is a kingdom begun in weakness. This, human wisdom has difficulty in accepting. One day Christ revealed to the apostles that he would have to go to Jerusalem to suffer and die at the hands of the Jewish leaders. Peter took Jesus aside declaring that this would never happen. Jesus rebuked him saying, " 'Get behind me, Satan! ... You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.' " The fact that Peter tried to defend Christ with his sword when apprehended in the Garden of Gethsemany, show that the apostles were still thinking of Christ as an earthly leader who would establish his kingdom by force.

Today human wisdom rejects the dogmas of the Church because they think that human beings cannot know absolute truth or God's unchanging Wisdom. They fail to realize that the Church is the "Body of Christ", that historical social entity rooted in the historical Christ which expresses absolute truth by the power of God's Spirit. So, human wisdom would have us change truths that cannot be changed because they are eternal.

In the end, the power and wisdom of Christ will be realized because He became obedient to death on the Cross.

Because of Christ humble obedience to the Father,

"God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend,
of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father."

(Phil 2:9-11)
