Christ during his life on earth performed many signs and wonders. Why?
Some of these signs reveal his power over the elements of this world. His first sign was to change water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana. On one occasion he was at sea with his apostles when a storm arose threatening their lives. All he said was, "Be still" and the wind died down and the sea became calm. One night the apostles saw Christ walk toward their boat on a windy sea and they became terrified. Peter wanted to make sure it was not really a ghost so he asked Christ if he could walk on the sea. Christ said, "Come". Peter began to walk but sank due to his little faith. And who can forget when Christ fed about 5,000 people with just seven loaves of bread and seven fishes. All of this shows that He had power over the elements of this world which raised a question in the apostle's a minds, "Who is this who had power over the forces of nature?
The second category of signs shows that Jesus had power over sickness and death. He healed the sick, opened the eyes of the blind and let the deaf hear and the dead are given life. One day a Capernaum a centurion came to Jesus asking him to heal his paralyzed servant. Jesus said he would go with him but the centurion realizing that he was unworthy and that Jesus had authority suggested that he just say the word to heal his servant. The centurion understood authority because he had soldiers under him who did what he told them. When Jesus heard this he praised the faith of this gentile and said to him, "Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed." This shows that Jesus could heal from a distance by just using his word.
The power of Christ was not limited to healing the body but also the soul. This was made evident by healing a paralyzed man. (Lk 5:17-26) Jesus began by saying to the paralyzed men, "Your sins are forgiven". When the scribes and Pharisees heard this, they thought to themselves,"only God can forgive sin". Was this man making himself God? Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins''--he said to the man who was paralyzed, "I say to you, rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home." (Lk 5:23-24)
we see that Christ had power over evil spirits.
Demonic influence on the human being is not so difficult to understand. This phenomenon can be compared to infestation of the human body by microorganisms which can bring about sickness and death. Likewise demonic influences can be a source of temptation, some sicknesses of the body and possession of our psychic powers. Although they can influence us to turn away from God, they cannot cause us to do so unless we will it.
The Devil has a certain dominion over mankind due to Adam's Sin. This was made evident in Israel at the time of Christ. One Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue at Caparnaum where he was comfronted by a man with an unclean spirit who cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God! 'Jesus rebuked him and said, 'Quiet! Come out of him!' The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, 'What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.'" (Lk 1:24-27) Christ began the defeat of cosmic evil while on earth and continues to do so till the end of time through his Church. "Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out." (Jn 12:31) The most astounding sign he gave us was the rising from the dead by his own divine power.
Most of the signs and wonders Jesus did for us so that we may come to know who He is. The question you must now answer is this: "Who is Jesus Christ to you?" Is he just a man, a teacher, a prophet or more than a prophet?
